I gripped my copy of Mexican Gothic when I received it in the mail. The cover alone made my jaw drop as I looked at the dress and the dark red and green colors. It truly is one of the best book covers I’ve seen. I immediately knew by the cover alone that I was in for a real treat.

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is a story about Noemí who travels to a mysterious house in Mexico after hearing news that her cousin is ill. Once she’s there, she begins to unravel the mystery of the house as things go bump-in-the-night.

Perhaps my favorite aspect of this story is the setting — the Mexican countryside in the 1950’s. As a Latino with Mexican heritage, it excited me that I would be diving into a world my grandparents grew up in.

Mexican Gothic was a fantastic book to read right before entering this “spooky season.” With flavors of Jane Eyre and Dracula, this novel fulfilled all my Gothic literature needs. It’s a great book to read for fans of horror or those who want to dip their toes into it as October is here.

Pick up a copy of Mexican Gothic this Halloween season.
